This rare halberd is from a well known group made for the Continental Army. The iron head is of the final evolutionary form of the halberd and is evidently cast iron. It has s crescent shaped axe blade with back fluke opposite and narrow spear point. An integral cylindrical socket joins it to its haft. Overall length is 79 ½” See American Polearms, Brown, Pl.57 for a virtually identical example from the Valley Forge Museum described as “Revolutionary War Sergeants halberd made for the Continental Army. A number of identical specimens are known.” This example has a smooth glossy chocolate patina to the head, possibly turned from blue. The haft has a glossy shellacked finish, probably applied after the war for display in a military or public building.
