C.1775-1783. Classic example of iconic form emulating European examples of the period, but displaying distinctive American manufacture. See The Book of the Continental Soldier, Peterson, p.98. 84 ¼” length. Forge iron head with crescent axe blade opposite curved back fluke. Broad swelled medial spear point and faceted socket with integral cheek straps. Original wood haft slightly swelled below the socket and tapered to the butt. Great age and provincial character including a wrought lamination seam to the right side of the spear point. 1960’s Cape Cod find.
