The emergence from the Dark Ages is embodied in the rise to power of the Frankish King, Charlemagne in 768 (founder of the Holy Roman Empire after 800) followed by conquering southern Europe from France to Italy and much of Northern Europe. The condition for peace was acceptance of Christianity, under penalty of death. Conversion was effective and Northern Europeans, primarily Saxons, wore Christian jewelry to profess their Christianity. This ring is size 11 with 5.8mm rounded face band flaring to the shoulders. The raised bezel is octagonal, typical for the period, with hound’s tooth crescents forming a cross and a hand scribed cross within. The inner cross has “crutches” at the beam terminals in the fashion of the Jerusalem cross, which would later be embraced by the Crusaders. Professionally refurbished with 24karat gold overlay restored for modern wear.
