This hanger was produced in Germany by an industry that supplied edged weapons to all of Europe. As they were made for export, it is likely that it was used elsewhere on the continent or perhaps England or America. Generally described as hunting swords, they were carried by civilians for personal protection as they predate the establishment of police for civilian law enforcement. The blade is 22”, broad fullered with spear point and narrow back fuller. The forte is decorated on both sides with a hound, and a stag/hound, and a boar motif. the base with Landshut, the town where it was made. The brass hilt with deep relief shell guard is characteristic for the period, but heavier than most and retains its fire gilding in protected places. A heavy fighting weapon to the turbulent years leading to the American and French Revolutions.
