Cast iron, about 1 5/8” diameter as cast with prominent mold seam and remnants of the connecting runners between the balls. Both runners chipped into the ball when separated from the gang and possibly rejected for that reason. Ex: Schindler’s Antiques, King Street, Charleston, 1980s. Unfortunately, the find site was not preserved. Confederate foundries were established at Richmond Virginia, Selma, Alabama, Rome, Alabama, Midlothian Virginia, and Atlanta Georgia. It is likely that only one or perhaps two produced grape/canister shot and this specimen could be further identified with research.
