Late 11th century, this amulet combines a Viking icon, the moon, with a trefoil, another Viking favorite. Other examples are known with a stylized cross in the place of the trefoil, dating both types to the period of Christian conversion.  In the 11th century, Christianity made footholds in Danelaw England, ruled by Vikings. A number of Abbys were built and Christians coexisted with the Pagan Vikings. Eventually, most Vikings were converted, and by the First Crusade, (1096) they served valiantly in defense of Christianity.

This amulet is from the period of transition, incorporating elements of paganism with the cross. See https://www.pinterest.com/pin/659495939170074252/ for another example. It is just under 7/8” in width (0.84”) with scalloped edge crescent, and foliate field. The crescent tips, traditionally emphasized as Sol the sun and Mani the moon, support the trefoil, which resembles an anchor. The cross was a favorite Viking motif, before their conversion and is found in many Viking Pagan representations. Bronze with considerable original (1000 year old) silver surface on an 18” modern sterling silver neck chain. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
