Peterson #113. Bronze hilt with straight cross guard, thickened edge boat form shell guard and two piece globular pommel. Silver wire wrapped grip. 30 3/8” straight broad fullered s.e blade decorated with scrolling foliage and trophy of arms. Decoration crisp with remnants of gold. Blade surface smooth brown turned from blue with a little raised oxidation at the point. Hilt excellent with original gilt now lost. This example is variant with its single edged blade. Virtually all of these were made in Germany and as with all officer’s swords, variants were produced, some to order and others by caprice, as the specifications were general and officers purchased their own swords.
Peterson notes variations to this pattern in The American Sword. All examples are very rarely encountered and the single edged blade variation much more so
