MASSIVE OTTOMAN TURKISH BATTLE AXE, 18TH CENTURY - Fagan Arms
The head of opposing crescents forming a near circle, 11 ¼” width. Each axe face with silver koftgari in radial bands, hatched and scrolling foliate, alternating. The bolster with silver lattice. The silver about 90% intact. 24 ¾” length. The iron haft made from a Damascus musket barrel as often encountered with forged domed terminals. The twist is evident in places and a depression in the grip area once seated a sigh. The reuse of gun barrels for axe hafts is well known and probably occurred when rearming under the pressure of imminent battle. A massive weapon which, in the right hands, could cleave a man in half!
