SIOUX INDIAN NECKLACE, LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Rosebud Reservation. About 24”, mixed red white heart beads with a central bronze trade jingle flanked by larger faceted cobalt blue beads. The make up is typical for a family which has acquired the beads over a period of time through trade and purchase. The Rosebud Reservation is home to the Lakota Sioux who, along with the Cheyenne, defeated George Custer’s 7th cavalry at the Little Big Horn. It is likely that the owner of this necklace would have known Indians who participated in that 1876 famous battle. Original seven strand string.
