Bright contrasting true gold on black. Late Meiji, c.1900. 4 3/4" diameter. The bowl with curved profile and domed cover with profuse crisp gold motif of a butterfly over flower bud and foliage. A meandering river below cut through the lacquer. That very subtle technique is rarely seen as it requires great skill to avoid cutting too deeply exposing the wood core. Fine bright colors and excellent preservation.
