Mughal, early 17th century. Iron, 11 3/4" height of characteristic form with slightly flared cuff. The surface decorated in silver damascene motifs of naturalistic foliage. The technique is identical to koftgari, but the subjects are fully delineated rather than in line work. The motifs compare in detail to those in the Taj Mahal tomb chamber and are specific to the reign of Shah Jahan and abandoned after his abdication in 1658. The silver 95%+ preserved in this example. Any Mughal of this period is very rare. This example is outstanding for its preservation and decoration which epitomizes the art of the period.
