CONNECTICUT HEAVY ARTILLERY MILITIA TROOPER’S SWORD 1862

In 1862, Connecticut formed two militia artillery regiments, the 1^st and 2^nd mustered January 2 and July 25. Both saw extensive action including the Battle of Cold Harbor for the 2^nd and both suffered heavy casualties. This an 1840 pattern artillery sword of the Connecticut militia with a 32 ¾” blade marked CONN 1862 with the Ames maker’s mark opposite (weak as typical). The hilt is plated as made and marked B 20, Company B, with 51 to the pommel. Wire-wrapped leather-covered grip a little dry. The blade retains faded blue mostly smooth with a little raised oxidation at the forte and minor pitting to the point. The plating and blue would have been quite dazzling originally. Rare and historical example in untouched condition.
