Iron hilt with thickened edge asymmetrical shell guards and spiral motif bulbous pommel. Iron wire wrapped grip. 31” diamond section straight blade with short ricasso and series of evenly spaced decorative grind marks to the right side. The blade is hand hammered and the decoration as expected from a provincial smith. The hilt as well, unusual in that the decoration of the pommel varies from the guard, probably indicating that it was reused from an earlier sword. Classic broadsword for the period, of sufficient length for use mounted as well as a foot. Probably served in the French and Indian wars and later, the Revolution.
