3 3/8” (3.39”) length, with a fluted tang to receive the binding to the shaft and tapered point. Fashioned from flat iron stock, a barrel hoop or wagon tire. Stable excavated condition, found in Colorado and thus likely Apache or Comanche. Colorado lies on the route to California and saw wagon trains headed to California since the 1849 Gold Rush. The silver strikes of 1864 brought hordes of adventurers, many of whom draft dodgers from the Civil War. Conflict with the native Indians was inevitable and many lives were lost on both sides.
