CONFEDERATE GRAPE SHOT JAMES ISLAND

Ex: Schindler’s Antiques, Charleston. About 1 1/8” diameter water find.  First Battle of James Island (Charleston), June 16, 1862. 6600 Union soldiers landed on James and marched toward Charleston. They attacked Confederate Fort Lamar at Secessionville and were met with merciless artillery. The 8th Michigan were "mowed down in swaths" from "a shower of musket balls and discharges of grape and canister" from the Confederate cannon.
