CONFEDERATE GRAPE SHOT FROM THE BATTLE OF FORT JACKSON

BATTLE OF FORT JACKSON LOUISIANA (New Orleans). The battle, April 16-28 1862 brought David Farragut’s fleet to the mouth of the Mississippi where Fort Jackson was positioned to protect New Orleans, up river, from attack. Losing one ship, the Union fleet successfully bombarded the fort and after four days pass on to capture New Orleans. This is an iron grape shot from the return fire of Fort Jackson. It is over 1 3/4” diameter and weighs 11.5 oz. In fact, a small cannon ball capable of shredding sails and rigging as well as inflicting mortal wounds.
