The sword of a Knight of the Holy See. Established in 1831 to honor Pope Gregory the Great (first) knighthood is bestowed on Roman Catholic men and women in recognition of their personal service to the Holy See. The Holy See is the Vatican territory in Rome, a sovereign state. This example dates to the 19th century, probably 1870’s-80’s and demonstrates the finest quality craftsmanship and artistry of that period. The gilt hilt is finely detailed by a master furbisher and bears a fine enamel badge of the order on its guard. The mother of pearl (nacre) grips are full and robust rather than the thin scales ordinarily encountered. The blade, plain as expected, is 29” long, of triangular section and as new in its original preservative. Fine gilt mounts to the leather scabbard and original silver bullion floral patterned suspension frog. Slightest storage wear only resulting in wonderful age character. The gold bright throughout. Just the second example we’ve encountered in 55 years.
