CONGOLESE SLAVER’S SPEAR

Fine untouched example from the Baptist Missionary Society Collection. Second half of the 19th century when the slave trade supplied South America and the Arab world. 79 ¼” length with elegant medially ridged leaf shaped point on open seam conical socket. Wood haft with 9 bands of decorative iron and brass trade tape. Tapered iron base piece. A war spear: At the time, tribal wars were for the sole purpose of producing captives for the slave trade. Showing great age and use at the time of its acquisition by missionaries, in the 1880’-90’s. The Baptist Missionary Society Collection was circulated among churches in England to raise funds for the Missions until the mid 1930’s when it was retired. It was sold at Christies London in the 1980’s.
