Gilt bronze, about ¾” (0.74”) total height. Formed as four circles with quartered nubs. This form is thought to derive from the Medici family coat of arms which incorporates five circles. The original symbol for pawn brokers was three flat circles from the Medici arms as the Medici family controlled the economy in Florence. The circles were later changed to balls for visual enhancement and hung outside the shops as trade signs. As used here, the symbol probably simply refers to Florence indicating a citizen of Florence, and thus, a subject of the Medici family.  Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored and suspended from an 18” modern gilt sterling silver neck chain. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
