Blacksmith made evidently under the pressure of impending. Forged iron, 12 ¾” length with swelled medial leaf shaped point, scrolling base spikes and tapered socket. See Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, #96.PA for a very similar example. Rough forged with hammer mark finish on original fire scale. Never file finished or sharpened. Great primitive character.  At the outbreak of the Revolution, many American troops were equipped with polearms as their primary weapons owing to a shortage of firearms.
