Fine large example indicative of an officer of significant stature as these were custom made and sized to suit the owner. 32” broad fullered straight s.e. blade crisply etched and gilt with crowned GR cipher, foliage, military trophies. Shows a little black pitting along the edge toward the point only. Gilt brass hilt with deep relief rococo decoration retains the small back quillon, usually lacking. Quite crisp with considerable heavy gold overlay remaining. Excellent silver wire wrapped grip. Exact pattern carried during the Revolution (Neumann 160.S). These early examples are made with a one piece guard. The 1796 pattern, based on this design, specified a folding side guard, however the use of earlier examples such as this was permitted and this one may have served through the Napoleonic Wars and War of 1812. Exceptional proportions and condition for these.
