The Japanese embraced firearms technology cautiously after Portuguese sailors introduced firearms in 1542. During those turbulent years in which the Muromachi shogunate was displaced by the Momoyama shogunate, firearms of every scale evolved and Japanese castle architecture was revolutionized in response to the threat of cannon. The following are from a cache of very rare unfired projectiles of the second half of the 16th century. While some matchlocks remain, they nearly all date to the later Edo period. We know of no other Japanese projectiles from this early period.
