Item Number: na72
Late 16th-17th century.  Iron khanda form hilt with long faceted back spike for two hand use.  The guard incised with nesting flowing line motif overall.  Long langets incised with eyes suggesting serpents heads. Broad ridged knuckle bow and inverted cup form pommel.  The hilt with good bright finish over some wear from use.  Fine 32 3/4” straight d.e. blade made in imitation of a heavy European rapier with line edged ricasso and long central fuller.  The firangi was the weapon of the Mahrattas in the 16th and 17th centuries and typically encorporated European rapier or broadsword blades or locally made copies of those blades as seen here.  See Stone, page 229
