EUROPEAN CRUSADERS RING..

11th-12th century.  Bronze with a narrow band supporting a large scalloped edge oval top plate.  Originally bearing a Christian symbol, most likely the cross, the plate has been coarsely defaced after the ring was captured by the Saracens.  Such defacement is well known and some rings were plated over the damage.  The scoring itself is deep and parallel, both removing the symbol and leaving an exaggerated damage in its place as a sign of defiance.  Light age patina.  Size 5 3/4.
