Bass hilt pierced throughout including the grip with trophies of arms, helmets, flags, drums etc. on foliage ground. 29” flattened diamond section blade, undecorated. Good rich patina with minor blemishes from use. The style of the sword is specific to the period enabling accurate dating. It was particularly popular in France suggesting a French origin. Officers purchased their own swords. Current fashion dictated styles, but quality varied greatly as did the budgets of their owners. This example was probably silver plated originally and is an excellent serviceable arm but lacking the fine detail found on swords carried by officers of the noble class.
