Ex Schindler’s Antiques, King St., Charleston SC, about 1980, where it was described as Confederate use. 32” curved broad fullered s.e. blade, unmarked. Iron hilt with three bar guard and small left side loop. The crossguard with regimental markings. Black japanned wood grip. Wear and spotty pitting to the blade. Hilt about Very Good. The grip with wear and chip to the heel. Condition typical for arms stored at the end of the war in the expectation that the South would renew the fight. A large proportion of the arms used by the South were from earlier sources. Much of it came from England and many English militia arms were of patterns unique to those militias. The nature of their service dictated that records not be maintained, however, this example has all the indicators for a Confederate attribution.
