AZANDE SLAVER’S SHIELD

Second half of the 19th century.  56” height.  Extremely intricate basket weave construction with transverse split cane bands secured with spiral wrap, rolled thickened edges and rolled verticals.  Reverse with original carved wood grip.  Exact type illustrated in Spring, p.80 & p.81.  Large central overlay panel lacks 11” x 1” along the edge, but no repair necessary.  One end separating in one quadrant but appears all there.  Can be pushed back and glued for a virtually undetectable and completely original repair.  Restored value would be about $650.00.
