These two fine examples illustrate the “pattern book” process of manufacturing. They were made by different smiths to a common pattern which was published and served as a guide to the industry. That assured that items produced would reflect the latest fashion and thus maximize marketability. Further, it relieved the producer of the need for artistic creativity. Though initially appearing very similar, they differ marginally in their dimensions and in their decoration. They were mounted and used as a set with tack studded cloth covering their hafts and large tassels below the sockets. The hafts are full original length (matching within 1/2” at 98” overall) with tack studded cloth covered butts. They probably originally served a noble or powerful family guard unit along with a number of other matching examples carried by guards in half armor.
