AN ITALIAN IRON SHIELD C.1550

This shield was made to be used in battle as well as on the tournament field and is equally suitable for both.  Its large size provided a substantial measure of protection but also required extensive practice to be used effectively for extended periods of time.  Its low conical form helps it deflect the blows of sword, axe or mace.  The edge is thickened to prevent cutting and the floral motif plate surrounding the central spike is designed to catch and foul an adversary’s blade.  Even a momentary engagement of an opponents weapon could produce the opening needed to deliver a devastating blow.
