This lance, made of a single piece of wood, finely fluted, with forged iron tip was used for tilting at the quintain, a revolving target simulating an opponent and tilting at the ring, which emphasized accurate placement of the lance point.  Both were used as practice as well as warm up exercises prior to the main tournament.  Those exercises carried on into the 17th century as primary events.  GC.166

Provenance: Thorsby Hall, Ollerton, Nottinghamshire, England.  This lance sold June 1, 1989.
CF:  Wallace Collection A1022 & A1023 for two similar tilting lances described as probably Italian XVII century.
