An Apulian Black Glazed Lekanis

Items #207-213 were purchased from Christie’s, London, in the 1980’s for our own collection and are unconditionally guaranteed authentic.  These seven examples are the last of the collection.  Whereas the majority of such examples which come to market are reconstituted from fragments and restored, each of these is undamaged and un restored.

The lid decorated in red on palmetts flanking left facing lady of fashion profiles.  Integral handle with scroll panel motif.  Blackware base of fine form with up flared handles, spread foot and angled body with vertical black banding.  The top with very strong decoration and very light surface encrustation from burial.  Could be cleaned but we never deemed it necessary.  The base with a little surface wear  Greek, South Italy, C. 4th century B.C.  4 1/4" high and 4 3/4" dia.  7" across the handles.
