SECOND HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY. 31 1/2 straight d.e. blade. Cruciform hilt with expanding swallow tail terminal cross guard and inverted pear shaped pommel. Wire wrapped grip. Hilt plated including the grip wrap, with about 90% plating remaining and smooth brown patina to the balance. Secret societies gained strength in the 19th century as a means of gaining power through strength of numbers. Their activities often resulted in violence and sometimes death as in the coal riots in Pennsylvania and the lynching of Masons in San Francisco. Most secret society swords are marked, but some, as with one, were unmarked to better serve their clandestine purpose.
