This fine sword was made for a well to do, probably titled military officer. The shell guards, quillon block, knuckle bow swell and pommel all are chiseled and chased in allegorical scenes of a naive couple in various pastoral pursuits and one of two cows. An early example of the grass is greener principle. The blade is etched with rococo scrolling foliage and panel with arms splay at the forte. It’s condition is superior, even for these and it likely was kept as a family heirloom.
